On 11 June 2012 Senior Course 120 (SC 120) started its third Field Study, “Regional Approaches”. During this study trip, Course Members and accompanying staff from the NATO Defense College (NDC) will visit Denmark, Lithuania, Russia, Norway and Iceland.
The Field Studies (FS) are an integral part of the Academic Programme of the Senior Course. Participants receive briefings from key players in countries visited, including senior national officials from the Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs as well as senior military and political figures of NATO and other international organizations. The requirement for the FS, as laid down by the NATO Military Committee, states that they should be organized in support of NDC academic objectives. It also directs that the FS should not exceed 32 days for each Course, and gives general guidance on the activities to be pursued.
In the Academic Curriculum for SC 120 the “Regional Approaches” FS is scheduled as part of Study Period F, “Regional Issues”. The aim of this Study Period is to present an overview of the geopolitical importance of selected regions, and key political, military, social and economic trends within them, as well as to consider possible roles for NATO in responding to threats and challenges within these regions.
