Wednesday 11 July 2012

On 11 July 2012 a group of 29 faculty and students from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California, visited the NATO Defense College (NDC).
The delegation was led by Dr. Walter Owen, Associate Chair for Distance Programs and Outreach at the NPS.
After a warm welcome and a tour of the College facilities, the visitors received a detailed briefing on the NDC from the Dean, Dr Richard D. Hooker, Jr. This provided them with practical insight into the College's daily life, its academic curricula and the scope of its activities. The briefing was followed by a very engaging Q&A session.
The visitors then attended a lecture by the Director of the NDC Research Division, Dr Karl-Heinz Kamp, on the topic "NATO after Chicago". Dr Kamp offered the delegation first-hand information on the Summit as well as his significant expertise on NATO topics. During the Q&A session, he addressed additional points of interest raised by the students and provided them with different perspectives on the future of the Alliance in the current security environment.
The Naval Postgraduate School is an academic institution whose emphasis is on study and research programmes relevant to the Navy's interests, as well as to those of other arms of the US Department of Defense. Visiting the premier educational institution of the Alliance, the visitors had the opportunity to benefit from the NDC’s expertise and to acquire a better understanding of its mission and of future trends in professional military education.
