38th Conference of Commandants participants at the NATO Defense College <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n

The Conference of Commandants continued its programme of activities this week at the NATO Defense College. To facilitate discussion, participants were divided into three groups, known as Thinking Platforms.<\/p>\n

The first TP analyzed how to find the right balance between traditional education and training and the new trends. Its title was \u201cNew themes in higher education \u2013 what is new and what goes out?\u201d This group was chaired by Gen. Raimund SCHITTENHELM (AUT A), Commandant, Landesverteidigungsakademie. The second TP was entitled \u201cHow to integrate military and non-military elements in the education of senior military officers?\u201d It examined ways of linking and coordinating these two dimensions and was chaired by Lt Gen. Andrew GRAHAM (GBR A), Commandant, Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. The last TP, chaired by Lt Gen. Dr Jim BARRET (CAN C), Canadian Defense Academy, concerned the relationship between education and training: \u201cEducation and training within the Action Plans (IPAP, ICP) are regarded as a key lever in cooperation: how can Academy Commandants contribute to this?\u201d <\/p>\n

At the end of the day, after in-depth study of the three topics, the Conference Chairman, NATO Defense College Commandant Lt Gen. Wolf-Dieter LOESER, presented the outcomes of the Thinking Platforms. The result was a great starting point for important considerations on both present and future activities aimed at achieving stability and security in a peaceful environment.<\/p>\n
