Today, Thursday 19 November 2009, the NATO Defense College was privileged to have the Eisenhower Lecture delivered to Senior Course 115 and NRCC members by H. E. Ambassador Pascale Andreani, French Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Council.<\/p>\n

The Commandant of the College, Lieutenant General Wolf-Dieter Loeser, after stressing the importance of the Eisenhower Lecture (the most important lecture of the Senior Course, always delivered by a high level speaker) as a longstanding tradition to honour the founder of the College, General Dwight D. Eisenhower<\/strong>,<\/strong> welcomed Ambassador Andreani before passing the floor to her.<\/p>\n

In her speech the Ambassador touched on several current NATO-related topics. She outlined the main stages in the history of the relationship between France and NATO: from the French withdrawal in 1966 from the Alliance’s integrated military structure up the recent decision by President Nicolas Sarkozy on France’s full return to the NATO military structure and the consequences that this reintegration will have. She said that there is no uniquely French approach but a widely shared European Union approach to NATO. With regard to the second main topic addressed, the New Strategic Concept, Mme Andreani strongly emphasised French expectations in the Balkans and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n

The lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session during which Ambassador Andreani provided expert opinions on the issues raised.<\/p>\n
