From 11 to 13 November 2014, the Middle East Faculty of the NATO Defense College conducted its bi-annual three-day simulation exercise in crisis management (CMX) for the NATO Regional Cooperation Course 12 (NRCC 12). <\/p>\n

The exercise aims to enhance strategic thinking and problem-solving skills: guided by an international team of highly experienced facilitators, participants were tasked with producing a critical and realistic analysis of the current crisis in Somalia. On this basis, they were required to simulate a multinational civil-military platform that could stabilize and secure the envisaged setting, and assess all potential implications of each proposed solution. In doing so, Course Members (CMs) were tasked with identifying a natural progression of problems and defining short- and long-term approaches.<\/p>\n

Participants were encouraged to assimilate practical examples from different areas of expertise: governance, security, and socio-economic development. With regard to these fields, CMs identified critical issues impeding stabilization efforts within the state and developed solutions. CMs highlighted internal and external actors with potential roles in achieving the agreed upon action items. <\/p>\n

On the final day of the exercise, CMs presented their findings on tackling the Somali crisis. Middle East Faculty Director, Col Giuseppe Morabito (ITA A), and his team of experts firmly believe that this exercise is not only beneficial for the enhancement of the participants\u2019 analytical skills, but above all for the sharing of perspectives and approaches between NATO and Partner nations.<\/p>\n
