The Generals, Flag Officers & Ambassadors’ Course (GFOAC 2019-1), entitled “NATO’s 360° Approach to Security”, took place at the NATO Defense College during the week of 12-17 May. Forty-eight senior military and civilian leaders, from NATO and partner states, attended the Course.<\/p>\n
Participants were welcomed on Monday morning by NDC Commandant LGEN Chris Whitecross (CAN F), Course Director BGEN Rolf Wagner (DEU A) and Course Coordinator COL James Huber (USA A).<\/p>\n
The first lecture of the Course, “Cultural Dialogue: the Western Encounter with the Rest” was by Prof. Christopher Coker (GBR), after which Prof. Sten Rynning (DNK) and GEN (ret.) John Allen (USA) spoke about “The Transatlantic Link: the Cornerstone of the Alliance”.<\/p>\n
On the second day, the opening lecture was “NATO & the EU: the Essential Partners?” by NDC Research Director Dr Thierry Tardy (FRA). In the afternoon, Dr Dmitry Suslov (RUS) and Mr Keir Giles (GBR) talked about “Russian Foreign Policy and Military Outlook”.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday morning Prof. Jonathan Holslag (BEL) spoke about “The Security Implications of the Rise of China”; and in the afternoon Prof. Holger Mey (DEU) gave a lecture on “Technological Development: Risks and Opportunities”.<\/p>\n
During the third day the Commanding General of the US Army Europe, LGEN Christopher Cavoli (USA), explained the role and the main tasks of his Command. The day concluded with a speech by Supreme Allied Commander Transformation GEN André Lanata (FRA F), who explained the role of ACT in improving the Alliance’s capabilities.<\/p>\n
“The Middle East and North Africa” was the title of the Thursday morning lecture by Prof. Mustapha Benchenane (FRA), while Prof. Julian Lindley-French (GBR) spoke about “The Future of NATO” in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
On the final day of the course, Mr. Michael Rűhle (DEU\/NATO) and Dr Robert Johnson (GBR) both lectured on “NATO Strategic Guidance and the Challenging Nature of Conflict”. Closing remarks were given by LGEN Whitecross.<\/p>\n
