\nMike Pence addressed an audience of Western
\ncurrent and former statesmen gathered to celebrate
\nthe 70th anniversary of NATO. After taking stock of
\nthe Alliance’s accomplishments over the previous
\ndecades, Pence ventured on the emerging challenges
\nand touched on an unexpected subject, the Indo-Pacific
\nregion: “By working together, we can maintain
\na free and open Indo-Pacific where independent nations
\nboldly pursue their own interests”. <\/i>1<\/a><\/p>\n
\na central feature of policy discussions in the US, it
\nhas been relatively absent from talks within NATO
\ncircles, as the issue is perceived as a matter lying
\noutside the organization’s mandate. But security developments
\nin this region do matter for its member
\ncountries. Moreover, there are ways the organization
\ncould play a significant role in the Indo-Pacific without
\ncompromising its pre-existing priorities. Against
\nthat backdrop, this Policy Brief aims to contribute to
\nthe emerging discussion on NATO’s engagement in
\nthe Indo-Pacific by first providing an appraisal of the policy implications of the US strategy towards the
\nregion, and then identifying realistic expectations for
\na NATO engagement in the Indo-Pacific<\/i>.<\/p>\n
