\nNATO countries may lose their industrial leadership
\nin defence production. Globalization and advances in
\ncommunications are widely believed to enable enemies
\nand adversaries alike to copy NATO countries\u2019 stateof-
\nthe-art weapon systems, and possibly even surpass
\nthem by developing next-generation weapon systems.
\nMoreover, so-called disruptive technologies like artificial
\nintelligence, quantum computing and additive manufacturing
\nare believed to offer cheaper and less technologically
\ndemanding options to countries that do not possess
\nthe decades\u2019 old defence industrial base of NATO countries.
\nThese countries could then use such new technologies
\nfor weakening NATO force structure.1<\/a>
\n<\/i><\/p>\n
\nHowever, adversaries and competitors still face significant
\nchallenges which are more insidious than those
\nNATO countries are facing. Because of the complexity
\nof modern technology, imitation, innovation and disruption in armaments production have become increasingly
\ndemanding over the past decades \u2013 especially for
\nnaval and aerial platforms intended to operate in competitive
\nenvironments. For NATO this implies more targeted
\ndefence investments and exploitation of industrial
\nspecialisation across the Alliance, as well as experimentation
\nand innovation with new technologies to favour
\ntheir future integration into the NATO force structure.<\/i><\/p>\n
