On 27 May, the NDC Research Division hosted a two-fold webinar on Russia\u2019s strategies of influence in the South.<\/p>\n
In its first part, the webinar brought together the NATO Strategic Direction South Hub with NDC researchers and external experts in a focus on the implications of the COVID-19 crisis on Russia\u2019s influence in the South. BGen. Re (ITA F), Director of the NATO Strategic Direction South Hub, presented the missions of the Hub that closely monitors the developments in the MENA region and the African continent partially. This first joint event organized by the NDC Research Division and the NATO Strategic Direction South Hub marked a new step in the development of the cooperation between our two institutions. <\/p>\n
The second panel consisted of a scholars\u2019 meeting in preparation of a Research Division edited volume on Russian strategies of influence in the South; the volume will be released in December 2020 and will be edited by Dr Chloe Berger and Dr Cynthia Salloum. The discussion covered a large array of issues including elements of continuity between Soviet and Russian strategies of influence in the region; Russia\u2019s major relationships in the South, its historical allies or new clients; why and how has Iran become important to Russia; what are its main interests in Syria and Libya; which model of stability is it trying to promote; as well as the constraints posed by the emergence of new competitors in the South.<\/p>\n
