On September 24-25, the Research Division organized a webinar titled \u201cNATO 2030: Adapting NATO to grey zone challenges\u201d in cooperation with the Policy Planning Unit at NATO Headquarters.<\/p>\n

The event was opened by the Dean of the NATO Defense College, Dr. Stephen Mariano, the Director of the Research Division, Dr. Thierry Tardy, and Mr. Ruben-Erik Diaz-Plaja, Senior Policy Advisor of the Policy Planning Unit at NATO Headquarters. The speakers and participants included experts from academic institutions, national governments and think tanks in addition to NATO representatives. <\/p>\n

This was the first of three-part series of workshops dealing with future challenges to NATO. Subsequent events will address technology and partnerships. The online workshop examined the future direction of grey zone aggression aimed at NATO by Russia in particular. Participants also discussed how NATO could respond to future challenges while improving current approaches. The webinar consisted of three sessions that analyzed different aspects of grey zone challenges including:<\/p>\n

  1. Information warfare<\/li>\n
  2. Asymmetric approaches<\/li>\n
  3. Economic coercion<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The goal of the event was twofold. First, it was to help contribute to NATO\u2019s reflection process for NATO 2030 with concrete recommendations. The second is to draft a report identifying future challenges and policy proposals for NATO. To this end, the presentations and discussions will inform this report encapsulating the most promising ideas for NATO 2030.<\/p>\n
