NPRs are important public statements: they set<br \/>\nout the administration\u2019s views on the role of nuclear<br \/>\nweapons in US grand strategy. NPRs are also crucial<br \/>\nsignalling documents. They provide insight into an<br \/>\nadministration\u2019s understanding of the prevailing geopolitical environment \u2013 including perceived risks and<br \/>\nthreats \u2013 and convey US intentions to allies and adversaries alike. Given NATO\u2019s significant reliance on US<br \/>\nextended deterrence, the elements of continuity and<br \/>\nchange that the new NPR will propose will inevitably<br \/>\nhave direct effects on NATO\u2019s defence posture. <\/p>\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">\n<hr style=\"height:1px; color:#e6e6e6;\">\n<div style=\"font-size: smaller; color: darkslategrey ; margin-top:-1em;\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"edn0\">\n        <sup>*<\/sup> <span class=\"np\"><a href=\"#_ednref0\" name=\"_edn0\" class=\"Subs\" >(back)<\/a><\/span> Andrea Chiampan is Marie Sklodowska Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at<br \/>\nthe University of Toronto, and was an Eisenhower Defense Fellow at<br \/>\nthe NATO Defense College between March and July 2021.
