\nthe Russian regime led by President Vladimir Putin launched a military invasion of
\nUkraine, marking the return of war in Europe for the first time in decades.<\/p>\n
\nin its political and strategic dimensions or in operational and tactical terms. The war
\nwas not an impossibility prior to 24 February, but it was certainly viewed in the West as
\nimprobable from the perspective of a rational cost-benefit analysis. This is especially so
\nwhen one considers Putin\u2019s attempt to swallow the entirety of Ukrainian territory. The
\nmeans with which Russia attempted its conquest also raise a number of questions as to
\nits armed forces\u2019 level of preparedness, organisation, and operational ability. Today, it is
\nclear that Russia\u2019s military capacity was overestimated while Ukraine\u2019s capacity to resist was
\nunderestimated. We have witnessed Russian forces encountering difficulties in achieving
\ntheir military objectives and a Ukrainian nation-state \u2013 including its armed forces and its
\nsociety \u2013 determined to deny Russia any gains. Politically, the Russian regime misread the
\nvery nature of the Ukrainian nation, which proved strong and unanimous in its rejection of
\nthe Russian endeavour \u2013 even in the country\u2019s supposedly Russian-leaning East (with the
\nexception of part of the Donbas).<\/p>\n
