Following Russia\u2019s recent invasion of Ukraine,
\nnumerous Western policy-makers and analysts
\nhave interpreted the Alliance\u2019s cohesiveness and
\nprompt response as evidence of its value in protecting
\nthe transatlantic community of liberal-democracy. NATO\u2019s Allies, the argument goes, have clearly demonstrated their shared determination to protect allied territory and core liberal-democratic values, re-affirming
\nthe Alliance\u2019s unshaken commitment to the principle
\nof collective defence. But can this momentum be sustained? <\/p>\n
While the Ukraine crisis has triggered initial practices of unity, it has also highlighted \u2013 and rendered
\nmore complex \u2013 difficult questions, tensions and normative dilemmas for NATO. This policy brief examines some of the key challenges that NATO is likely
\nto face in protecting the transatlantic security community in the unstable, post-February 2022 environment.
\nWhat is particularly important to understand is that
\nsome of those challenges concern key norms and values around which NATO defines itself. There are no
\nsimple answers to the political questions facing the
\nsecurity community \u2013 but there are steps that can be
\ntaken to put the Allies in a stronger position to address them.<\/p>\n
