The 29th edition of the NATO Regional Cooperation Course completed the Crisis Management Exercise (CMX), conducted from 3-5 April 2023 at the NATO Defense College. The CMX is a three-day simulation exercise for participants to better understand NATO\u2019s Comprehensive Approach to crisis management, as defined in NATO\u2019s Strategic Concept.<\/p>\n

This strategic-level exercise aims at building a shared understanding of the complex strategic considerations in contemporary crisis management design, including the need for inter-institutional and civilian-military collaboration to foster security and stability. During the CMX, Course Members were divided into three different groups, and guided by their Faculty Advisors and Senior Mentors: Lieutenant General (Ret.) Jan Broeks, former Director General at International Military Staff (IMS); Lieutenant General (Ret.) Antonio Li Gobbi, former Director Operations at IMS; and Mr Ted Whiteside, former Deputy Assistant Secretary General responsible for Public Diplomacy at NATO HQ. <\/p>\n

Additional goals of the exercise were to increase the awareness of the nature of fragile and failing states (such as root causes and symptoms) in areas spanning governance, the economy, society and security. Participants learned the requirements of international crisis management at the strategic policy developmental level to respond to complex emergencies in fragile states. <\/p>\n

Course Members have a unique opportunity during this exercise to gain practice in collaborating in an international civilian-military environment and critical thinking, while receiving guidance from professionals with immense expertise in these areas.<\/p>\n
