The NATO Defense College conducted its Modular Short Course (MSC 148-2) on \u201cThe Changing Character of War\u201d from 18 to 29 May 2026. Following Senior Course 148\u2019s curriculum, this two-week programme brought together 32 senior military and civilian officials from NATO member countries. The Course was specifically designed to deepen participants\u2019 understanding of the Alliance’s shifting strategic environment while fostering high-level dialogue and professional networking.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through both lectures and committee work, participants tackled the complexities of modern warfare and multi-domain operations across land, air, maritime, space and cyber domains. Discussions notably examined how emerging and disruptive technologies (EDTs), cognitive warfare and climate and energy security intersect to reshape modern conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Course enabled both Senior Course and MSC participants to think beyond traditional battlefields and exchange perspectives on the changing character of war. Sessions addressed the challenges and opportunities presented by the Alliance\u2019s adaptation and transformation to remain fit for purpose in today\u2019s strategic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, MSC 148-2 provided a high-level forum for collective learning and critical thinking, equipping the Alliance\u2019s leaders with the tools and skills necessary to navigate today’s rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
