Senior Course 144 visited Paris, France, as the second stop on Field Study 2. During their stay, Course Members were briefed on France’s defence strategic vision and had the opportunity to engage with high-ranking officials including the Chief of Defence, General Thierry Burkhard, as well as high-level practitioners from the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The briefings, delivered at the Cercle National des Arm\u00e9es (CNA) by former Deputy Permanent Representative of France to NATO Alexandre Escorcia, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Captain Thibaut Del Giudice, from the Ministry of Defence, offered insights into France’s defence posture, strategic priorities, and its role within NATO. Emphasizing France’s commitment to NATO, discussions centred on bolstering the Alliance\u2019s defence and deterrence capabilities to address evolving threats and challenges, as well as on fostering cooperation among Allies and partners, and priorities for the Washington Summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Course Members also discussed France’s stance on nuclear deterrence, the cornerstone of the country\u2019s defence strategy, and the readiness of its armed forces to respond effectively to evolving security challenges. Additionally, they had an exchange on the role of Parliament in defence policy and on current events with Natalia Pouzyreff, Member of the French National Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, the Paris leg of Field Study 2 provided Course Members with a deeper understanding of France’s defence and security framework and of the country\u2019s contributions to promoting international peace and security and fostering stronger collaborative defence efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Course Member Lieutenant Colonel Stefano Vit, from the Italian Air Force, was grateful for the discussions, which underscored Allies\u2019 dedication to maintaining NATO\u2019s credibility as a model of unity among forces, adding that \u201cthis invaluable experience has undoubtedly given us a better understanding and enhanced our ability to work together and more effectively in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Field Study 2 programme aims to deepen Course Members\u2019 knowledge of European Allies’ national perspectives on defence and security, from first-hand sources. Recognizing the diverse postures of Allies is crucial for fostering intercultural understanding, which in turn enhances the effectiveness of the Alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
