SC 139 European Security Perspectives Field Study - Germany
Senior Course 139 concluded Field Study 1 with a visit to Berlin, where the Course was most warmly received. Upon arrival, Course Members commemorated German National Day.
Dr. Karl-Heinz Kamp, a former Director of the NDC Research Division and currently Special Envoy of the Political Director, welcomed the delegation at the German Ministry of Defense. He then provided a comprehensive review of Germany’s security policy. Brigadier General Dirk Faust, Chief of Division for Strategy and Operations, followed with a detailed operational view of the Bundeswehr.
After these sessions, Course Members took part in a panel discussion on Afghanistan. Ambassador Jasper Wieck, Special Envoy of the Federal German Government for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Dr Markus Kaim, German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Dr Ute Finkh-Kramers, former member of parliament, and Lieutenant General (retired) Rainer Glatz, former Commander of Bundeswehr Operations Command, provided their unique perspectives on the country and the situation.
In both sessions, Course Members had a unique opportunity to pose questions and interact with these distinguished lecturers. Such interactions, paired with enriching cultural events, and the Bavarian Evening, made for a truly rewarding visit and wonderful end to Field Study 1. Course Members will return to Rome with a deeper understanding of the Allied countries they visited.
