The 49th NATO Conference of Commandants (CoC) was originally planned to be held in Riga at the National Defence Academy of Latvia (NDAL), and co-chaired by the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL), from Tuesday 26 to Thursday 28 May 2020, under the theme “PME and the Future Warfighter”.
Due to the constraints of the COVID19 pandemic, it was not feasible to organize such an event with hundreds of people, and a virtual conference was held instead on 26 May 2020. However, in order to facilitate the connection through the Big Blue Button platform, participation was reduced to 22 NATO countries, 2 Co-Hosts, 1 Partner (Australia) and 3 NATO representatives (DGIMS: LtGen Hans-Werner WIERMANN, CoS ACT: VAdm Paul Martin Bennett, and Commander of JALLC: BrigGen Bogdan CERNAT).
The main objective was to share “Lessons Learned” on the impact of the pandemic on academic operations with NATO-nation Professional Military Education institutions teaching at the colonel and civilian-equivalent level, in order to find better solutions to challenges in the COVID19-era education, and strengthening the PME network.
The Conference of Commandants focuses on priorities integral to its historical mission, which is to further the development of Professional Military Education. It also serves as a forum to foster the exchange of information and ideas, striving to improve curricula and educational methods while fostering mutual understanding.
