The NDC hosts the second workshop in the “Roman Banya” Series - Russia and China: ‘Axis of Convenience’ or ‘Lasting Strategic Partnership’?

Organized by the NATO Defense College’s Research Division on 23-24 May 2019, the second “Roman Banya” Series workshop provided an excellent opportunity for experts to discuss Russo-Chinese relations and implications for NATO. In particular, the political/security and economic dimensions of this bilateral relationship were examined.
Participants from universities and think thanks worldwide, as well as from NATO Headquarters, were welcomed by Dr Thierry, Director of the NDC’s Research Division, and by Dr Marc Ozawa, Researcher at the NDC. The workshop consisted of three different panels: the first session covered current Russo-Chinese relations, while the second and third examined domestic developments and foreign policy drivers – Russia, China and regional Partners (Korea and Japan), and implications for NATO and Europe.
The objective of the event was to have an open and creative exchange of ideas on developments of strategic importance to NATO, as well as to explore how substantive current Russo-Chinese cooperation is, and where the relationship is heading.
The final aim was to help form a network of Russia and China scholars and analysts for future partnerships and collaboration.
