On July 8, the NATO Defense College hosted an authors’ workshop organized by the Research Division titled “The Eastern Flank Five Years post Wales.” Participants presented early drafts of their future contributions to an edited volume and discussed developments on NATO’s Eastern Flank. The authors were a diverse group representing academia, think tanks, NATO and national militaries, in addition to NDC staff and Course Members.

The range of topics included:
- Nuclear and conventional deterrence
- A2/AD weapons systems
- Hybrid warfare
- Cyber and energy security
- Defence spending and burden sharing
- Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP)
- Readiness Action Plan (RAP)
- Maritime strategies
- The Baltics
- Eastern partnerships
- The Black Sea region
Authors will submit their final drafts in the coming months. The Research Division plans to publish the edited volume by the end of the year in recognition of the five-year anniversary of the Wales Summit, which was a widely recognized turning point in NATO’s approach to the Eastern Flank. The book will explore how far NATO has come in meeting the goals set forth in the Wales Summit Declaration.
