On 22 November 2019, the NATO Defense College, together with the European Initiative for Security Studies (EISS), and the Institute for European Studies (IES) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) co-hosted a joint policy workshop on 'Intra-Alliance Challenges to NATO’s Cohesion and European Security'.

The event brought together academics and practitioners from across Europe to exchange on the key challenges that NATO faces in the 21st century.

Following a Call for papers, ten selected scholars gave presentations on specific challenges for the alliance’s cohesion, followed by discussions with NATO policymakers and the audience. While Thierry Tardy, Director of the NDC Research Division, gave opening and closing remarks, and moderated one panel, Wojciech Michnik, Eisenhower Fellow at the NDC, presented his paper on "Assuming the Worst? What If NATO Members Cannot Agree on Threat Perception and Strategic Priorities?".
