On June 17, the Research Division of the NATO Defense College co-hosted a workshop with Rome-based Istituto Affari Internazionali entitled, "NATO in Space: Challenges and Opportunities of a New Domain."
Bringing together participants from the European Space Policy Institute, various NATO and EU Agencies, industry and research centers such as the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency, the workshop focused on the current state of play on space issues; the relevance of space for geopolitics and economics; primary actors; and existing trends and emerging opportunities. In 2019, NATO leaders agreed to deem space a new domain. The decision brought about recent changes, including the establishment of a Space Centre in its Allied Air Command in Ramstein (Germany) and a Center of Excellence on Space in Toulouse (France). The workshop delved into the growing contestation of space; how NATO and its Allies can face new threats; and the mix of strategic and industrial options they can adopt to preserve their current position.
