On June 4, 2021, the NDC and the Fondation Méditerranéenne d’Etudes Stratégiques (FMES) hosted a seminar on current transformations in the North African and Sahelian region.

Regional experts and scholars, as well as NATO representatives, focussed on future perspectives in the changing security landscape of these two increasingly interconnected regions, and the implications for the Alliance and its partners. The discussion examined current and forthcoming challenges in the Sahel and their repercussions on the stability of North Africa and the Mediterranean Basin. Panellists and participants reflected on possible ways to foster stability in the “Grand Maghreb” region, with a particular focus on NATO’s possible contribution to this effort.
In the context of the strategic reflection about NATO 2030 supporting the development of a new Strategic Concept, this webinar is the second of a series of events co-organized by the NDC and the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the Fondation Méditerranéenne d’Etudes Stratégiques (FMES) and the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) exploring ways to enhance NATO’s contribution to stability in the South.
