On 29 October, SC 117 visited the United Nations Headquarters, its first stop on the Transatlantic Link Field Study in the United States.
Col P. VAN DER HEIJDEN and Ms E. LEMOS-MANIATI, the NATO Military and Civilian Liaison Officers, gave an extensive and interesting introduction to their work in the UN and NATO-UN relations.
Mrs Anne WU, from the Department of Political Affairs (DPA), briefed SC Members on UN’s counterterrorism policy, strategy and action.
The Chief Current Military Operations/Office of Military Affairs (CMOS/OMA), Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Col W. VAN DULLEMEN, gave an exellent and very detailed presentation on the UN’s peacekeeping operations and the challenges faced by the UN. The Course engaged in a lively discussion on UN peacekeeping missions and their effectiveness with Lt Gen B. GAYE, Military Advisor to the UN Secretary General.
High-level panel lectures were given by four Permanent UN Security Council Military Advisors from Russia, the UK, China and France. The representatives gave SC 117 first-hand information on the complex enviroment of UN peacekeeping operations and the work done in the UN.
In his closing remarks, the Commandant of the NATO Defense College, Lt Gen Wolf-Dieter LOESER, highlighted the importance of the UN and its relationship with NATO.
