The idea of a NATO Defense College originated with General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the first Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). He identified the need for a new international institution with a unique educational mission very early on.

le Collège inaugure sa première Session à Paris.
In 1954,
the first Anciens’ reunion was held at SHAPE. The spirit of unity and the bonds forged among the NATO Defense College Senior Course Members have always flourished through the Anciens’ community, resulting in valuable exchanges during these reunions.
En 1966,
la France s'étant retirée de la structure militaire intégrée de l'Alliance, le Collège est transféré à Rome pour y poursuivre sa mission.
En 1972,
the NATO Defense College held the first Conference of Commandants (CoC), bringing together defence colleges from across NATO to foster cooperation and mutual understanding within the Alliance.
En 1989,
the Generals, Flag Officers, and Ambassadors’ Course (GFOAC) was launched to deepen strategic understanding among senior leaders and to deepen a shared perspective on global security challenges.
Le 10 September 1999,
the new College building, twice the size of the old one, was inaugurated in the military precinct of Cecchignola, 2 km. from the former site.
Le 25 September 2001,
le Collège célèbre son 50e anniversaire et accueille la 48e Conférence-Séminaire annuelle de l'Association des Anciens.
En 2004,
The Academic Research Branch was created, expanding the research activities of the NDC.
En 2009,
commémoration du 60e anniversaire de l’OTAN et des 10 ans de l’installation du Collège de Défense de l’OTAN à la Cecchignola.
En 2009,
the NATO Regional Cooperation Course (NRCC) was created to serve as a platform for addressing critical issues that connect NATO with nations part of the Mediterranean Dialogue, Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, and broader Middle East partners.
En 2016,
the NATO Defense College celebrated its 65th Anniversary and the College’s 50th year in Rome: “50 Years in Rome, 65 Years Serving NATO“.
En 2022,
The NATO Defense College held for the first time the Generals, Flag Officers, and Ambassadors’ Course for Partners (GFOAC-P) Sahel on the premises of the G5 Sahel Defense College (G5SDC) in Mauritania.
En 2024
the 70th Anciens’ Seminar, themed “NATO 75: A History of the Future,” reflected on NATO’s past and held discussions on its future, highlighting the NDC’s role in educating leaders who influence global security.
