On Sunday 11th September 2011, SC 119 commenced the 60th walk around the walls of Rome. The course set off from Piramide, in excellent weather, and under the leadership of Colonel Stuart MacRostie – began the circumnavigation of Rome following the Aurelian Walls (see map). Not only is the event an opportunity to see parts of Rome one would not otherwise see and learn a little more of the fascinating history of the walls, it provides an opportunity to meet fellow members in a relaxed setting and walk, talk and get to know one another. The group consisted of almost 200 people, which included the Commandant, Faculty and Staff from the College and Senior Course 119, guests from Naples, a large contingent from the British Embassy (including the British Ambassador to Italy), the British Ambassador to the Holy See and numerous family and friends.
The route followed its normal course and included the usual BBQ lunch at the British Embassy. At the Embassy gardens, Colonel Joe Wiley and his logistics team set up food and drinks to refresh the participants from the hot Roman weather.
As this walk took place on the 10th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the USA, the Dean of the College, Dr. Richard Hooker, took the opportunity to say few words about 9/11 and to hold a few moments of silence to remember all those who lost their lives that day.
The group marched on throughout the day in ever increasing temperatures and the walk concluded back at Piramide, safely, with 106 brave walkers finishing successfully – a total which we believe is a new record. The day proved how popular the Walls Walk continues to be with each successive Senior Course.
