Sweden has often been described as NATO’s “number one partner”, having contributed more than some Alliance members to NATO operations. In a recent crisis management exercise in Norway, Sweden even offered Article 5 support to the Alliance. At the same time, Sweden’s long tradition of neutrality and non-alignment has kept it from applying for full membership.
