On 22 March 2021, the SC 138 embarked on Innovation Week, in its second edition as part of the NDC’s Senior Course. Innovation Week aims to expand Course Members’ understanding of innovation with a focus on NATO, the EU, and on specialized organizations working in a national and supra-national context.
Day one of Innovation Week began with welcome remarks by the NDC’s Commandant, LGEN Olivier Rittimann, who spoke of how the programme seeks to deepen Course Members’ understanding of innovation in the Alliance and in Member States. The first lecture was delivered by the NDC’s Dean, Dr. Stephen J. Mariano, who provided an insightful overview on theories and practices of innovation. Afterwards, Dr. Andrea Gilli, Senior Researcher at the NDC, shared his expertise by talking about the main challenges that organizations face regarding the evolution of automation of human tasks. The last presentation of the session was given by Dr. Niccolò Petrelli, Eisenhower Defense Fellow at the NDC, who gave a briefing on the transition to a 5th generation of combat aircrafts, and discussed the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter Program. These constructive lectures led to a very interesting Q&A session, followed by closing remarks by LTC Pugliese, from the Italian Carabinieri and Course Member of SC 138.
