On Friday 18th of June, this day of Field Study 3 focused on the European Union (EU), in which various subject matter experts and lecturers from the EU provided Course Members with a broad overview of EU practices, as well as the main features that define relations between the EU and NATO.
The session started with welcome remarks delivered by the NDC Dean, Dr Stephen J. Mariano, followed by a presentation of the programme by Ms Fabienne Timmermans, from the Visitors’ Centre of the European Commision Directorate for General Communication. The first lecture was given by Mr Petr Mooz, Senior Expert Directorate-General for the Budget of the European Commission, who introduced the Commission’s priorities and briefed Course Members on the von der Leyen Commission’s 6 priorities and ongoing work. Course Members were then briefed on the strategic overview of the contemporary challenges, threats and opportunities under the EU Strategy Compass, presented by Ms Raphaela Engel, from the Security and Defence Policy Division (climate change and defence/security). Ms Nicole Peil, from the Visitors’ Centre of the European Commission Directorate for General Communication then introduced Mr Panagiotis Giannakoulias, from the Defence Policy Directorate for EU-NATO relations, who provided Course Members with an insightful view into EU-NATO cooperation. Field Study 3 came to an end with the closing remarks by a Course Member.
