Today, 3 April 2009, Vice-Admiral Dean McFADDEN, Commander of Canada Command, delivered a Lecture of Opportunity on Security Prospects in the Arctic, focusing in particular on the Canadian perspective.
The Commandant of the NATO Defense College, Lieutenant General Wolf-Dieter LOESER, welcomed the Admiral and his delegation to the College.
During his lecture, Vice-Admiral McFADDEN discussed the Canada Command Structure, the Arctic area’s potential in terms of commercial routes and new resources, and stressed the risks of a high-latitude region. He also talked about the new security challenges and the Canadian government’s integrated Northern Strategy, in which the initiatives taken in the region by the new Canadian Arctic Force in coordination with neighbouring countries are a vital factor.
Also present at the briefing were representatives of NATO countries and the Russian Military Attaché in Rome.
