Among the various lectures attended by the Senior Course, one stands out as particularly important because of the topic addressed and the guest speaker delivering it. Known as the “Eisenhower Lecture” in memory of the founder of the NATO Defense College, it numbers very distinguished lecturers in its gold book.
This morning Senior Course 116 had the privilege to attend a lecture on the topic “Readiness is all”, given by Mr Robert E. HUNTER, former US Ambassador to NATO and former US Representative to the Western European Union. He was warmly welcomed by Lieutenant General Wolf-Dieter LOESER, Commandant of the NATO Defense College, who emphasized that this was an outstanding opportunity for Course Members to widen their horizons of knowledge.
After outlining Alliance commitments from the beginning of its history up to the current operation in Afghanistan and possible future scenarios, Ambassador HUNTER underlined the instrumental role played by the NATO Defense College in promoting the “essence of the Alliance” through its courses.
He defined the “essence of the Alliance” as human interoperability – working together in unison, despite different uniforms and flags, to achieve a common goal.
The lecture was followed by a very stimulating Q&A period, during which Course Members showed a lively interest in the topic and submitted a number of challenging and wide-ranging questions to the Ambassador.
