On 24 April 2013 the NATO Defense College hosted Colonel Massimo Mennitti of the Carabinieri Corps, Chief of the Plans and Military Police Office – Carabinieri General Headquarters, who addressed the ninth Regional Cooperation Course (NRCC 9) in a special lecture entitled “Introduction to the mission of the Italian Military Police – the Carabinieri Corps”. The Director of the NATO Regional Cooperation Course of the NDC, Col Giuseppe Morabito (ITA), warmly welcomed Col Mennitti and introduced him to the audience.
The aim of the lecture was to provide Course Members with an authoritative and exhaustive overview on the activities of the Carabinieri Corps.
Col Mennitti attended the Military Academy of Modena (164th Course) and the Carabinieri Officers’ School from 1982 to 1986. He then served as a Platoon Commander at the Carabinieri Warrant Officers’ School of Florence and, from 1987 to 1989, at the Military Academy of Modena.
He was promoted Captain, and served as a Territorial Company Commander in Cortina d’Ampezzo and Merano from 1989 to 1998.
From 1998 to 2001 he was assigned to the Command of International Military Police within NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe, Mons (Belgium), with the rank of Major. After attending the 4th Course of the Italian Joint Service Staff College, he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel. Between 2002 and 2006, he was Chief of Training Courses and Point of Contact for the FIEP, the Euro-Mediterranean association of military-status police forces (the acronym “FIEP” being a reference to founder members France, Italy, Spain and Portugal).
His most recent assignment, before becoming Chief of the Planning and Military Police Office at the Carabinieri General HQ with the rank of Colonel, was as Provincial Commander of the Carabineri in Siracusa (Sicily), from 2006 to September 2011.
Col Mennitti has received a number of high-level decorations: Knight Commander of the Italian Republic; the Medal for Long Service; the Silver Cross for 25 years of outstanding service in the Armed Forces; the NATO medal for Operation “Joint Guardian”, in Kosovo; and the Gold Medal of Merit of the French National Gendarmerie.
