On Wednesday, 23rd October 2019, the NATO Defense College welcomed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, H.E. Mr Nikolaos Dendias, who delivered a Lecture of Opportunity to Senior Course 135, NATO Regional Cooperation Course 22, Modular Short Course 135-3 and Integrated Partner Orientation Course 2019-2.
The Foreign Affairs Minister was accompanied to the NDC by H.E. Ambassador Kyriakos Loukakis, Political Director of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Greek Ambassador to Italy, H.E. Theodore Passas; the Greek Ambassador to the Holy See, H.E. Nicolaos Patakias; the Director of the Minister’s Diplomatic Cabinet Mr Yannis Tsaousis and the Spokesman of the Ministry Mr Alexandros Gennimatas. The delegation was welcomed by Dean and Acting Commandant Dr Stephen J. Mariano. After the office call, Minister Dendias delivered a Lecture of Opportunity on “Greece’s Foreign and Security Policy with a special view to the role of NATO and how to meet the challenges in Southern Europe”. In his address, the Minister underlined the importance of NATO for guaranteeing security and deterring threats, but also stressed the role of Greece in promoting peace and stability in the Mediterranean and Aegean regions.
Minister Dendias is a Supreme Court lawyer and has been a Member of Parliament since March 2004, when he was elected for Corfu. As a New Democracy MP, H.E. Dendias served as Minister for National Defence from November 2014 to January 2015; Minister for Development and Competitiveness from June 2014 to November 2014; Minister for Public Order and Citizens’ Protection from June 2012 to June 2014; and Minister of Justice from January 2009 until the national elections on 4 October 2009. From July 2019 Nikolaos Dendias has served as Foreign Minister of Greece in the new government.
