The NATO Defense College hosted Modular Short Course 133-4, entitled "Centres of Power", from 7-11 January 2019.
Run in conjunction with the Senior Course, the aim of Modular Short Courses is to analyse the role and character of NATO, its organization, policies and activities, as well as the contribution it makes to security and the adaptations necessary to remain relevant to the changing international environment and the demands of current operations.
This edition of the Course brought together 22 military and civilian participants from 10 NATO countries. On Monday morning participants were welcomed in the Maynard-Thorn Auditorium by NDC Commandant Lt Gen Chris Whitecross, introducing the day´s lectures on "Japan and the Koreas". The speakers were Dr Scott (GBR) and Dr Tsuruoka (JPN).
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the MSC attended the "China Seminar", which included lectures in the Main Auditorium with two different panels: the first with Dr Boutilier (CAN), Prof. Pu (PRC) and Dr Tellis (USA); the second with Prof. Holslag (BEL) and Prof. Sabonis-Helf (USA).
The topics for the remainder of the week were: “Sub-Saharan Africa”, covered by Dr Gnanguenon (FRA) and Dr Mills (ZAF ) on Thursday; and “Iran and Saudi Arabia”, with a lecture by Dr Pedde (ITA) on Friday.
