From 23 June to 4 July, the NATO Defense College (NDC) launched its first “Changing War” Modular Short Course, attended by 36 participants from NATO member states. This intensive two-weeks course focused on the major security trends across all operational domains and aimed to discuss how NATO can effectively adapt to the evolving security landscape.
Military officers and civilian officials from 15 Allied nations joined the curriculum and lectures of the NDC Senior Course 146, taking part in daily committee work, Q&A sessions and discussions. In so doing, the Course enabled the participants to exchange views with distinguished lecturers and Senior Course Members coming from different NATO member states and partner nations.
Over the course of two weeks, attendees explored key topics such as standardization and interoperability, emphasizing NATO’s sustained efforts to contribute to global security through Multi-Domain Operations (MDOs). They also had the opportunity to learn more about the impact and implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for NATO, reflecting on how the Alliance should adapt to this technological revolution. Drawing upon the lessons learned from the case studies of China and Ukraine, the Course underscored NATO’s transformation and adaptation to emerging and disruptive technologies.
A key strength of the MSC was its deeply interactive and hands-on approach. Through a combination of briefings and discussions, the Course highlighted the shared challenges confronting both NATO and its partner countries across all operational domains – land, sea, air, space, cyberspace. These sessions facilitated crucial reflection on how to ensure the sustained relevance and future-orientation of military organizations, as well as the Alliance’s role at the forefront of promoting global security.
