The words of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI and the unique atmosphere in St Peter’s Square made a deep impression on the many Course Members and Staff of the NATO Defense College who attended the General Papal Audience.
The Papal Audience is regarded as a vital part of the NDC academic programme. It gives visitors the chance to see the Holy Father and receive the Apostolic Blessing from the successor of the Apostle Peter. However, it was not only an important and moving occasion for Roman Catholics but also a cultural experience for all participants of SC 117 and NRCC-4, regardless of their religious beliefs.
The NDC delegation and their families were cordially greeted by Pope Benedict XVI. The Audience continued with small readings, mainly in Italian, but also in English, French, German, Spanish, Polish and Portuguese.
At the end of the Audience, participants recited the Lord’s Prayer in Latin together with the Pope, who, as Head of the Catholic Church, bestowed his Apostolic Blessing upon everyone present.
Afterwards, Course Members, Staff and families visited the Vatican Museum, which is one of the largest in the world, consisting of the Sistine Chapel, Raphael’s Rooms and at least a dozen self-contained museums, housing some of the greatest works of classical sculpture.
