Research Paper 93: “NATO and the Arab League: The Importance of Being Earnest”, by Mona El-Kouedi.
Even if NATO is not a major player in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) region, it is still involved through its partnerships with many countries in the region, and not least through its recent military engagement in Libya. The latest Research Paper from the NDC Research Division deals with the question of how to improve the relations between the Atlantic Alliance and Arab countries. The author, Mona El-Kouedi, argues that the ongoing developments in many Arab countries necessitate a revision of the frameworks within which NATO cooperates with the MENA region. The Alliance should institutionalize its cooperation initiatives towards Arab countries by investing more in its relations with the Arab League, if it wishes to establish a strategic, sustainable and long-term partnership with the Arab world.
