Since the end of the Cold War, with the exception of its air policing mission in Iceland, NATO largely has been kept out of the defense and security equation in the High North.
With five member states possessing northern circumpolar geography, and a host of others increasingly engaged in a region which falls within the Alliance’s treaty area, the question is why? Shouldn’t NATO have a bigger role in the region?
