On Monday 27 September, the NRCC 26 embarked on its first week of Field Study with a virtual visit to the European Union.
After welcome remarks by Ms Nicole PEIL from the EU and Dr Stephen J. MARIANO, NDC Dean, Mr Andras KOS (EEAS, Division Partnership & Agreement) spoke about EU and NATO cooperation. Ms Alina PAPUC (EEAS-Desk Officer Morocco Directorate MENA) followed with an overview on EU global strategy in the MENA region. Finally, the EU virtual visit concluded with a lecture on the EU’s agenda on China, delivered by Mr Balazs KISS (Unit Far East -China- Directorate General Trade).
The afternoon was dedicated to a virtual visit to NATO Headquarters. Dr Mariano (NDC Dean) and MGEN DIELLA (NATO HQ) delivered the opening remarks. The visit started with a briefing by Col MARTINEZ-ESPARZA (Cooperative Security Division Deputy Director) on NATO Partnership. The topic of Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation was presented by Mrs LEMOS-MANIATI (Acting director and Deputy Director of the ACDC/PASP). The virtual visit was concluded by Mr ZIMMERMAN (IU/ESC) who delivered the presentation on Emerging Disruptive Technology Roadmap.
Day 2 of the Field Study started with a virtual visit to SHAPE. Dr MARIANO and RADM TURAN (SHAPE DCOS-OPS) opened the session. Mr HUSSAIN (NIC, SDP/J5/PLP) then delivered a briefing on the Main Mission and responsibilities of SHAPE within NATO. He was followed by Mr CASE (NIC SHAPE) who talked about the Russian threat. Mr WHITE concluded the day with a presentation on The Framework for Partner Involvement in NATO-led Operations.
