NRCC 27 traveled to Matera (Italy), from 16 to 18 March as part of its Field Study.
The NRCC 27 delegation was received by the Councilor for Culture and the Sassi, Dr Tiziana D’Oppido, who represented the Mayor of Matera, Dr Giovanni Bennardi, the President of the Municipal Council Dr Antonio Materdomini, the Chief of Cabinet Dr Gianfranco Lopez, and COL Roberto Lerario, Carabinieri Provincial Commander of Matera.
The visit began with a lecture given by Mr Francesco Foschino and Mr Raffaele Paolicelli, on the theme “Matera: a history of contradictions, from rich to poor, from forgotten to strategic”, who also addressed the strategic importance that Matera held under the Marshal Plan and during the Cuba crisis.
Subsequently, the delegation visited “the water system and the dug cisterns” and the “Palombaro Lungo,” features that earned the city its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The activity ended with a visit to the historical “Sassi” of Matera.
