From 20 to 21 June 2024, the NATO Defense College hosted its first edition of the Senior Executive Seminar (SES), in collaboration with the Aspen Institute Italia. This event brought together senior advisors to heads of state, government and parliaments from Allied nations. The aim of the Seminar was to deepen participants’ understanding of NATO issues and to foster discussions on military and security challenges that directly influence political decision-making within NATO.
The Senior Executive Seminar opened with two keynote speeches delivered by the NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană, and the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer. They delved into the overarching topic of “NATO at 75 and the Changing Security Landscape” and discussed the pressing security challenges facing the Alliance and how NATO is evolving to address these issues.
The Seminar continued with two expert-led panel discussions on critical current issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war. These sessions, delivered through an active moderated style, capitalized on the speakers’ outstanding expertise in security, defence, and policy. The discussions assessed the battleground, the state of military support to Ukraine, the conflict’s development, its consequences on European and transatlantic security, as well as NATO’s deterrence and defence strategy. The format encouraged active participation, fostering engagement both within the panels and with the participants.
The second day took place at the Aspen Institute Italia and focused on “Europe’s Relevance in the Current Security Environment: Direct Responsibilities and Transatlantic Cooperation.” Experts led discussions on Euro-Atlantic industrial capacity and the European macroeconomic framework for defence investment, maintaining an interactive approach with the attendees.
Moreover, the SES offered the opportunity for networking among the participants through side events such as a dinner hosted by the Italian Chief of Defence, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, which enhanced strategic relationships.
The overall programme provided a unique, high-level platform for senior advisors to engage in strategic discussions, deepen their understanding of critical NATO issues, and build professional networks. Participants gained access to expert knowledge, enhancing their ability to make informed decisions for NATO and its member states.
With its relevant curriculum and dynamic panels, the SES fostered strategic thinking and collective understanding, ultimately contributing to the strength and resilience of NATO.
