Today, 23rd April 2009, Mrs Anne-Grete STRØM-ERICHSEN, the Norwegian Minister of Defense, delivered a lecture of opportunity on Security Prospects in the High North to the Senior Course and the NATO Regional Cooperation Course, within the framework of the Study Period “Global Security Challenges”.
The Commandant of the NATO Defense College, Lieutenant General Wolf-Dieter LOESER, welcomed the Minister and her delegation to the College.
During her lecture, focused in particular on the Norwegian perspective, Mrs STRØM-ERICHSEN discussed climate change and its connection with the melting polar ice cap. She explained that these factors are creating a new geopolitical situation in the area, and new security challenges for NATO. She stressed that coordination and cooperation in this regard with neighbouring countries, in particular Russia, rather than confrontation, should be pursued, and that stabilization was a crucial factor.
