On 18 and 19 April 2013 the NATO Defense College (NDC) was honoured to host a two-day visit from Lt Gen Jürgen Bornemann, Director General of the International Military Staff (IMS).

LtGen Arne Bård Dalhaug (NOR A), NDC Commandant, warmly welcomed LtGen Bornemann to the College. A round table
discussion was then held, with the participation of Dr Richard D. Hooker (USA C), NDC Dean, MajGen Carlos Branco (POR A), Director Cooperation and Regional Security Division/IMS, BrigGen P Desjardins (FRA F), Director Academic Operations, Commodore Harald Hakonsen (NOR N), Director of Management, BrigGen G. Bischof (DEU F), Director of Academic Planning & Policy, Col G. Morabito (ITA A), Director of the NDC Middle East Faculty, and Col K. Marselis (NLD F), MA to the Commandant.

In the afternoon, Lt Gen Bornemann was introduced to German Course Members and Staff.

The following day, Lt Gen Bornemann delivered a Lecture of Opportunity to Senior Course 122. This talk, entitled “Strategic update on NATO HQ”, allowed Course Members to benefit from first-hand information about NATO HQ. They also enjoyed a stimulating and detailed discussion with the lecturer, during the Question and Answer session that followed.

Lt Gen Bornemann attended the Federal Armed Forces University, Hamburg from 1976 to 1980, and was Staff Officer, Army Force Planning from 1988 to 1990.

Between 1990 and 1992 he was Regiment Commander of the 6th Army Air Defence Regiment and, in 1992-1993, he held the position of Staff Officer in the Politico-Military Affairs Branch. In 1993 and 1994 he served as MA to the State Secretary for Security Policy, and for the next two years he was German Military Representative to the Military Committee at NATO HQ in Brussels. From 1995 to 2000 he was Head of the Armed Forces Politico-Military Affairs Branch, and from 2000 to 2005 he was Deputy Head of the Politico-Military Affairs Control Division in the Federal Armed Forces.

Lt Gen Bornemann held the position of Assistant Director Plans and Policy Division in the International Military Staff at NATO HQ from 2005 to 2008. His most recent assignment was as German Military Representative to MC NATO and to the EUMC, from 2008 to 2010.

Since 2010, Lt Gen Bornemann has been Director General of the International Military Staff at NATO HQ.
