On Monday 28 September, NRCC-24 started their Field Study with a virtual visit to Spain hosted by the Spanish National Defence Studies Centre, CESEDEN, in Madrid. The topics covered were: the Spanish defence and security Policy, the Spanish Armed Forces and the way Spain and its Armed Forces have been dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
After the welcome remarks by the Deputy Director of CESEDEN, Lieutenant General Francisco de Paula Bisbal Pons and the introductory comments by Dr. Stephen Mariano, Dean of the NATO Defense College, the day started with a lecture on the Spanish foreign and defence policy, more specifically addressing the MENA region. The following session on the foreign operations of the Spanish Armed Forces focused on the missions, and organization of military deployments abroad.
The work of the Spanish Armed Forces in the COVID-19 ‘Balmis Operation’ was the last of the topics of the day by a representative from the Spanish Institute of Strategic Studies. All the sessions were followed by Q&As.
