On 2 and 3 December 2009 the Research Division of the NATO Defense College held an International Research Seminar on "NATO and Gulf Security" in the framework of the Mediterranean Dialogue and the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative. Important changes are underway in the Gulf, which remains one of the most sensitive regions in the world.
NATO is already committed to the Gulf through the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) and a training mission in Iraq.
This seminar brought together researchers, senior officers and officials from institutions, agencies and universities in NATO, MD and ICI countries, in order to promote a better understanding of the security challenges in the region, and explore ways to improve cooperation and dialogue between NATO and its ICI partners. For the first time, nearly all the Gulf States were represented, including Iran.
