On Tuesday, 1 December 2009, the first day of the Winter Field Study on “European Perspectives” was held at the NATO Defense College. SC 115 Course Members were briefed by Italian Representatives.
Counsellor Andrea Romussi, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gave a presentation on Italian foreign policy, emphasising the three pillars of Italian security: the EU, the UN and NATO, and Italy’s leading role in efforts to reform the UN Security Council.
Dr Vicenzo Delicato of the Ministry of the Interior briefed on the challenge of controlling illegal immigration into Italy, outlining migration patterns and bilateral efforts to deal with the problem.
Last but not least, Brigadier General Farina of the Italian General Staff gave an outstanding lecture on Italian security and defence policy. He described the framework of Italian international commitments at a time of decreasing resources, and presented Italy’s objectives for modernization and reform and explained how the Italian Armed Forces were implementing the plan.
The lectures were followed by a very productive discussion period, during which the speakers provided exhaustive answers to the questions raised.
