This year’s final Modular Short Course (132-5) took place from 2-6 July 2018, at the NATO Defense College. Entitled “Centres of Power”, the Course was held in conjunction with Senior Course 132, bringing together a total of 19 high-level military and civilian participants from 11 NATO countries.
The aim of this Course is to provide an overview of the geopolitical importance of selected regions, and to address key political, military, social and economic trends within them, as well as to consider possible roles for NATO in responding to threats and challenges within those areas.
On Monday morning, NDC Comandant LtGen Chris WHITECROSS welcomed participants, before introducing the first panel of speakers for the “China Seminar”, with lectures delivered by Dr James BOUTILIER (CAN), Dr Todd HALL (USA) and Dr Ashley TELLIS (USA). During the afternoon, the audience heard presentations from the second panel, including Professor Theresa SABONIS-HELF (USA) and Dr Christina YEUNG (CAN).
On Tuesday, Course Members continued their discussions within the assigned working groups, while on Wednesday they attended a lecture by Dr David SCOTT (GBR) on Japan and the Koreas.
Thursday’s panel was dedicated to Sub-Saharan Africa, with lectures delivered by Dr Amandine GNANGUENON (FRA) and Dr Greg MILLS (ZAF). The final day’s lectures focused on Iran and Saudi Arabia, with valuable contributions from Dr Nicola PEDDE (ITA) and Dr Christian KOCH (DEU).
Modular Short Courses form part of the five-month Senior Course, and represent a valuable learning opportunity for military officers and civilian officials who would not be able to attend the Senior Course for its entire duration.
