Securing the Commons: towards NATO’s new Maritime Strategy
The globalization of security policy, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and missile technology and the menace of piracy have refocused NATO’s interest on the maritime dimension of security. As a result, NATO has initiated the development of a comprehensive Alliance Maritime Strategy (AMS), which is due to be completed by early 2010.
The NATO Defense College has published a new study that identifies the underlying purpose behind NATO’s recent emphasis on maritime affairs. It offers perspectives on the major direction of the AMS in the light of NATO’s new Strategic Concept.

Arguing Afghanistan: what the detractors of NATO’s mission get wrong
Afghanistan is in the limelight again, particularly after the debate about the German attack against Taliban fighters near Kunduz.
Critics of NATO’s mission in the region have been quick to request an immediate withdrawal, using popular but flawed arguments. As a contribution to an informed debate, the NATO Defense College has published a research paper that presents concise reasoning for the need to remain engaged in the region as long as necessary.

NATO and the new US “Af-Pak” Strategy
Soon after his inauguration, President Obama ordered a fundamental review of the situation in Afghanistan and beyond. A few months ago, Washington presented a fresh approach to Afghanistan and Pakistan – known as the “Af-Pak Strategy”. A new study by the NATO Defense College analyses the implications that this will have for NATO and ISAF.
