The Crisis Management Exercise (CMX) was conducted on 6, 7 and 8 April 2021 as part of the NRCC 25 Course. The CMX is three-day simulation exercise. Its objective is for Course Members to familiarize themselves with NATO Crisis Management Process and NATO’s comprehensive approach to crisis management.
During the CMX, Course Members were divided into three different groups, and guided by their Faculty Advisors and Senior Mentors throughout the process. Briefed by LGEN (Ret.) Jan Broeks, former Director General at International Military Staff (IMS); LGEN (Ret.) Jo Godderij, former Director-General at IMS; and LGEN (Ret.) Antonio Li Gobbi, former Director Operations at IMS, the exercise objective was to develop Course Members’ awareness of the complexity of conflict resolution in the current strategic environment, where security, political and socio-economic issues are intertwined.
In order to develop the Exercise and achieve the agreed-upon goals, supportive objectives, supportive actors, and initial actions were provided. Given that one of the main objectives of the exercise was to foster ‘human interoperability’, Course Members had to collaborate and to develop a shared understanding of the complex strategic considerations in contemporary crisis management design. This includes the need for inter-institutional and civil-military collaboration in pursuit of security and stability. After identifying and developing shared understanding of the problem, CMs had to develop a common strategy to remedy the problem that calls upon inclusive and comprehensive critical thinking in an international civilian-military scenario. On Day 3 of the Exercise, the three Committees presented their resolutions and proposals. The Crisis Management Exercise concluded with debriefings provided by the Senior Mentors.
