On Sunday 6 March 2011, Sc 118 commenced the 59th walk around the walls of Rome. The course set off from Piramide, in good weather, and under the leadership of the Centurian in Charge – Group Captain Pete Allan – began the circumnavigation of Rome following the Aurelian walls. Not only is the event an opportunity to see parts of Rome one would not otherwise see, and learn a little more of the fascinating history of the walls, it provides an opportunity to meet fellow members in a relaxed setting and walk, talk and get to know one another better.
The route followed its normal course, with one diversion to the church of St Croce in Jerusalem. Thanks go once again to the British Embassy, for allowing SC 118 to use the embassy gardens for lunchtime refreshments, ably set up by Col Joe Wiley and his logistics team. The logistics team supported the Walls Walkers all around the route with food and drink, and their support was very much appreciated.
The group marched on throughout the day, including children in ‘buggies’, morale was high in spite of aching limbs, and the walk concluded back at Piramide, safely, and in fine weather with 88 brave walkers finishing successfully. The day proved again how popular the Walls Walk continues to be with each successive Senior Course. A great day was had by all, as you can see from the group photograph.
